The back of the watch bears the relevant military specification, part number and date information, together with the instruction that it should be disposed of as “radiation waste”. This watch has an interesting life story!
As I understand it, it was procured, along with many other watches, by the British MoD in the ‘s and was evaluated at Herstmonceux Castle at that time owned by the Admiralty for potential military use. In the 70’s, the watches used in the evaluation were sold and became part of a private collection. Ownership was then transferred to the author of a well-known book on military timepieces who, in , sold the watch on to another collector.

Given that we are looking at an original Omega dial, the latter will affect the valuation of the piece. There are several aspects with regard to the dial that need to be checked out. One thing is the hour markers, minute markers and the 6, and 9 digits. One tell-tale of a fake dial is stubbies. Stubbies are minute markers underneath the hour markers, see illustration below.
An example of so-called “stubbies”, i. Notice the lumina color difference on the dial compared to the second hand.
Notice the “two-step” nature of the sloped part of the back This is the style that pre-pro Speedmasters possess. Note that there is a Hippocampus or “Seamonster” engraved on the caseback but it is difficult to photograph and is often faint due to many years of wear on people’s wrists

To view these serial numbers, the bracelet must be detached from the 6 ‘clock side of the case. For instructions on removing the bracelet, see the video to the right or call us at to speak with a Rolex expert.
You can also learn where to find Rolex serial numbers here. As with the serial number, the bracelet must be detached from the 12 o’clock side of the case to be able to check the serial number. For instructions on removing the bracelet, watch the video above or call us at to speak with a Rolex expert. Nuremberg clockmaker Peter Henlein or Henle or Hele is often credited as the inventor of the watch.
He shapes many-wheeled clocks out of small bits of iron, which run and chime the hours without weights for forty hours, whether carried at the breast or in a handbag However, other German clockmakers were creating miniature timepieces during this period, and there is no evidence Henlein was the first. They were heavy drum-shaped cylindrical brass boxes several inches in diameter, engraved and ornamented.
They had only an hour hand. The face was not covered with glass, but usually had a hinged brass cover, often decoratively pierced with grillwork so the time could be read without opening. The movement was made of iron or steel and held together with tapered pins and wedges, until screws began to be used after
